Some New Stuff http://somenewstuff.com stop me if you've heard this before... posterous.com Fri, 07 Jan 2011 05:22:56 -0800 Who is the real competition for the MacBook Air? http://somenewstuff.com/who-is-the-real-competition-for-the-macbook-a http://somenewstuff.com/who-is-the-real-competition-for-the-macbook-a As is always the case, whenever a new Mac is revealed, reviewers scramble to compile a list of Windows computers that are comparable but cost several hundred dollars less. Anything to reinforce the concept that Macs are premium priced, elite systems.

What I find moat interesting is the reaction of the other manufacturers. Dell and HP have cut the price of their higher end laptops - the Adamo and Envy - to bring their prices in line with the Air.

In addition, the CES announced Air clone from Samsung is actually several hundred dollars higher than the Air.

But Apple is the premium priced manufacturer?

Fri, 07 Jan 2011 05:12:01 -0800 One thing the Mac App store got right... http://somenewstuff.com/one-thing-the-mac-app-store-got-right http://somenewstuff.com/one-thing-the-mac-app-store-got-right One twist to the software purchase experience that is a part of the Mac app store that I'm glad to see...the concept of buy once, use everywhere.

I have more than one computer, and the freedom to install an app legally on both without having to pay for a full second license is a very welcome and reasonable change.

Wed, 15 Dec 2010 19:16:00 -0800 Blundstone boots http://somenewstuff.com/36519626 http://somenewstuff.com/36519626

Bought a pair of Blundstone boots. Slip on boots from Australia. Had read some great reviews and they were on my wish list. Fantastic boots. Comfortable, little to no break-in. Got the brown, might order black after the new year.

Wed, 08 Dec 2010 19:55:10 -0800 MacBook Air Initial Reaction http://somenewstuff.com/macbook-air-initial-reaction http://somenewstuff.com/macbook-air-initial-reaction Was in the Apple store today and had a chance to try the Air. Amazing...

Thirteen inch is a great size, nice screen, almost too thin, your mind thinks fragile even though it's really not.

Think it's funny to ready the reviews that complain about the underpowered processors. Just not an issue. The bottleneck is rarely every the processor. It's the hard drive.

One of the things no one ever mentions when comparing the over-priced, under-powered Air to a windows box is that, once unplugged, most Windows laptops step the processor way down to save battery life. So that 2.8ghz proc might actually be stepping down to 2.0 or lower when running on battery - right in the range of what the Air is running at.
